A featured historic renovation and restoration project from ALG’s legacy project experience.
As Project Manager for RC Mathews Contractor, I led the high-profile 140,000 square foot historical renovation and restoration Project of the Landmark Historic US Post Office, located on Broadway in Nashville, TN, into the transformation of the Frist Center of the Visual Arts now called the Frist Museum.
The project required building and relocating a new US Post Office in the basement of the building in order to rehab, restore and renovate the remaining square footage into the new museum. Included in the building restoration and rehabilitation were an Exhibition Hall, Gift Shop, Auditorium, Cafe, and Administrative Offices.
We restored more than 50,000 square feet of historic wood block floors, existing terrazzo floors, ornamental aluminum grillwork, and marble Paneling. The aforementioned historic wood floor required hand removing and storing the wood floor in conditioned warehouses away from the site during the demolition and interior construction (approximately 10 months). It was then reinstalled and refinished by hand using the same installation process. This project also required the installation, of what was at the time, the largest freight elevator in the state of Tennessee to accommodate the art exhibit exchanges. The project also required that a state-of-art HVAC system be installed in order to control temperature and humidity, ensuring that the protection of priceless art exhibits was ensured.
A unique twist to this project’s construction was that the project was constructed during Y2K. Special preparations had to be considered and implemented surrounding the uncertainty of the technology scare associated with the beginning of the 2000’s.
The exceptional quality and finishes of the project are testament to the craftsmanship that went into every detail of the restoration and renovation.
